Born and raised in Kingsport, Tennessee, Hayes Brown holds an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Emory & Henry College, and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Alaska Anchorage. He has edited three magazines and one anthology. His first book, Carhood: A Southern Memoir (1999), is a funny coming-of-age story told through Brown's memories of his family's cars.
